Cristian Domizzi Match Worn Newell’s jersey – Torneo Clausura 1992, Argentina.Champions coached by Marcelo Bielsa with Cristian Domizzi as the maximum reference consolidating a new defensive-offensive style.
Bio: In 1992, Newell´s Old Boys led by Marcelo Bielsa participated in Copa Libertadores de América. On March 9 they played in Chile against Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, and the day before in Rosario against their classic rival for the Torneo Clausura 1992. This meant that Newell ‘s Old Boys had to play 2 games in less than 24 hours and in different countries. The leaders of Newells requested the postponement of the derby against Rosario Central, but they rejected the request. The coaching staff analyzed the situation with the top leaders of the squad to decide with which players to face the matches on Sunday 8 and Monday 9. It was decided that the derby would be played by a reserve youth team along with three starters: Juan José Rossi, Juan Manuel Llop and Cristian Domizzi. Two of them participated in both key matches for the club, making a great physical and mental effort. The match was played at a full stadium. After a cross to the near post by Rossi, a header by Domizzi would mark the 1-0 in favor of Newell’s Old Boys, a result that was maintained until the end of the match. That is why that March 8, -with the victory of Newell ‘s Old Boys against Rosario Central with the club’s reserve – the “Día del Padre Leproso” is celebrated.
