BIO: Lucas Ademar Bernardi is a former professional footballer and coach from Argentina.
Bernardi came up through the youth ranks of Newell’s Old Boys, where he made his debut in the Argentine Primera División in 1998. In 2000, he was transferred to Olympique de Marseille of Ligue 1 for €6 million. He performed well, but was forced to leave the team a few months after arriving in France to help replenish the club’s finances.
For the 2001-02 season, he was transferred to AS Monaco. There, he quickly became a regular starter and key player, to the point of being chosen as the best midfielder in the French league by the newspaper L’Équipe in his first season with the club. With the Monegasque team, he won a League Cup (2003) and was a finalist in the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League.
In January 2009, he returned to Newell’s Old Boys where he became champion of the 2013 Torneo Final, as captain of the team. In November 2014, he announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.
